Step by Step Guide : Nature’s Exfoliators

Filters are great, but healthy skin is better!

When it comes to looking good, there are so many options out there (even when you exclude makeup!) But did you know that “skin routines” have been around for ages! The ancient Greeks were known to have made their own skincare products with natural ingredients. I mean obviously, they had to make do with what they had, spa’s, botox and anti-ageing cream didn’t really exist back then. But maybe...Natural is better when it comes to skincare!

In this article, we shall take a look at natural ingredients that work very well as exfoliators. Before we take a look at them, let us take a quick look at what exfoliation is and its benefits.

Why should you exfoliate?

Exfoliation gently rubs off all the dead and dry skin. You can exfoliate all your body - from lips to feet! Once the dead skin is off, it leaves room for new skin to grow. This helps you to get soft glowing skin and is great for the skin’s health.

Exfoliating prevents acne, evens skin tone and unclogs pores. It increases cell turnover and stimulates Collagen Synthesis. When you exfoliate, it also helps other skincare products penetrate deeper and hydrate a lot more.

Natural Exfoliators

The key to successful exfoliation is to use gentle exfoliants. Many manufactured exfoliants may contain plastic microbeads that can cause micro-abrasions in your skin and are harmful to the planet.

An exfoliant doesn’t have to be expensive to be effective. In fact, many natural products that you likely already have in your pantry may be all you need to exfoliate your skin.

These natural exfoliators are gentle and easy to use! Make your own recipes or find them added in your favourite skincare solutions with Nature’s Rhapsody

1. Sugar

If you have sensitive skin or you’re looking for an effective exfoliant that’s gentle enough for your face, you’ll want to use something finer like sugar. The glycolic acid found in sugar cane is a natural chemical exfoliant that can help separate dead cells from new cells in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of your skin. When applied gently, this can help safely and effectively remove dead skin.

Not to forget, sugar also adds a delectable flavour!

2. Coffee

Your favourite drink can also double as a skincare product! Ground coffee is an excellent manual exfoliant that can help scrub away dead cells and debris when massaged into the skin. On top of that, caffeine has been shown to plump skin and fight signs of ageing such as wrinkles and dark spots. It’s a good antioxidant that also promotes collagen formation giving you smooth skin.

3. Oatmeal

Oats are very gentle as well as hydrating for your skin. Oatmeal is such a great exfoliator that it is a common ingredient in many skin care products. Known for its therapeutic anti-inflammatory properties, oatmeal helps with gentle exfoliation as well as moisturizing and protection from UV rays.

4. Turmeric

Your spice box contains the magical ingredient that’s beneficial for your skin!  Turmeric contains curcumin, the compound that gives it its yellow colour and many of its health benefits. Turmeric is used medicinally to treat skin conditions throughout South Asia and has been shown to reduce inflammation and fight infection when used as an exfoliant.

5. Seeds (Flax and Papaya)

Grinding dry seeds makes for a simple DIY exfoliator. Seeds like Flax and Papaya have a lot of fatty acids and anti-inflammatory properties that help plump your skin as well as gently rub all the dry skin off.

Nature’s Rhapsody uses sugar as a basic ingredient in all our lip and body scrubs along with other natural ingredients like apple, mint, papaya and coconut. The blend of these ingredients brings out all of nature’s goodness and add the tastiest skincare options to your routine.
